INGREDIENTS
- 2 oz Bourbon (Kentucky Straight Bourbon for authenticity)
- ½ oz Simple Syrup (store-bought or homemade)
- 2-3 Fresh Mint Sprigs
- Crushed Ice
- Mint Garnish (optional)
Equipment
- Highball Glass (or julep cup)
- Bar Spoon
- Muddler (optional, but helpful for extracting mint flavor)
- Instant-Read Thermometer
INSTRUCTIONS
step 1. Chill the GlassPlace your highball glass or julep cup in the freezer for at least 15 mins. A frosty glass is essential for a perfectly chilled mint julep.
While the glass chills, wash and pat dry your mint sprigs. If using a muddler, gently bruise the mint by holding a sprig between your palms and lightly tapping it a few times on a counter. Alternatively, leave the mint whole for a more subtle infusion.
If using a muddler, place the mint sprig(s) in the chilled glass and gently muddle 2-3 times. Be careful not to over-muddle, as this can make the drink bitter.
Pour the ½ oz of simple syrup into the chilled glass.
For optimal dilution and a smooth drink, aim for the bourbon to be between 50-55°F (10-12°C). If your bourbon is stored at room temperature, you can achieve this by placing the bottle in a container filled with ice water for 10-15 mins.
Carefully measure and pour the chilled bourbon into the glass with the mint and simple syrup.
Pack the chilled glass tightly with crushed ice. A bar spoon is a helpful tool for this.
Use your bar spoon to gently stir the drink for about 10 seconds. This allows the mint to infuse and the bourbon to dilute with the melted ice. While stirring, take a quick temperature reading with your instant-read thermometer inserted into the drink. It should be close to freezing (around 32°F or 0°C). If it's not quite there, add a bit more crushed ice and stir again.
Top your mint julep with a fresh mint sprig for garnish (optional). Serve immediately with a straw and enjoy your perfectly chilled and flavorful mint julep!
TIPS:
- For a more authentic presentation, serve your mint julep in a julep cup, which is a wider, silver cup with a flat bottom.
- If you don't have simple syrup, you can make your own by dissolving equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan over low heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely, then let cool before using.
- Adjust the amount of mint to your preference. Start with less and add more for a stronger mint flavor.
- Be sure to drink responsibly.
